For me, painting – especially abstract painting – is viscerally connected to music. One of my paintings is entitled “Fugue” because I see the transparency of color upon color in the same way I hear transparency in music: a theme rises to the fore, then disappears, and then repeats softly, emerging from underneath, subtly modulated, perhaps reappearing in a different key.
