Returning to the states after eighteen years in Europe, I moved into a loft in the crowded, warehouse Tribecca section of New York City. What a shock after living on a bucolic farm in Brittany, a perched village in the poetic Midi of France, and the luminous city of Rome! Still, I was thrilled to be in the heart of the abstract movement in America. Struck by the strong, gestural paintings and inventiveness of American artists, I began the Black and White series.
