Until moving to Rome in 1970, I had always worked from nature. Once in Rome, the striking Mediterranean light and classic, geometric forms of Roman architecture were a sharp contrast to atmospheric, nordic light and gentle landscapes that had inspired me in Brittany during the 1960s. In addition I took up printmaking in Rome, a rigorous technique that introduced an internal structure in my painting. These were among the factors led me to abstraction.
